Montwood High School Volunteer of the Year 2007-2008

As your SISD School Board Trustee, I promise to work with you, and do whatever I can to restore our district to a place where trust and openness are part of the educational formula. I would like to see a district where students, teachers, administrators and community members have a sense that something good is happening here. If the Mississippi river starts with a single drop, so does education. It starts with focusing on the success of an individual student and progressing to a classroom, to a school and finally a district with the students overall well-being in mind. The district is facing serious challenges today and is sure to face equally difficult situations in the future. I would like to work with you in being part of a positive solution.

I was born in El Paso, where I have lived all my life. I am very proud of my home town. I grew up in Ysleta, where I graduated from Ysleta High School and went on to UTEP. I graduated from UTEP with a BA Degree in Political Science. I am also a graduate of Leadership El Paso, Class 18, 1997. I am married and have two children who are about to complete their SISD education. I have always had a strong sense of community and family and to that end my family and I have decided, that I should enter the race for School Board trustee at-large.

A significant part of my time has been devoted to supporting our children in their school activities, both academic and extracurricular. My family and I have participated in many school projects. Whether it is making props for the band, helping with concessions or supporting an event as chaperones, we are always willing to help. I personally enjoy the time I spend volunteering in our schools, the fact that my children, wife and friends are there, is a bonus.

I have had an opportunity to serve on several campus and off-campus organizations and/or committees, which are listed here:

Benito Martinez PTA - Member

William D. Slider Band Boosters – President 6 years.

Montwood High School Band Boosters – President Fall 2004 to present

Montwood High School ROTC Boosters – Member Fall 2004 to Spring 2006

Montwood High School Boosters – Member Fall 2004 to present

Registered Volunteer Rio Grande Girls Scout Council September 1996 to present

Core Curriculum Committee, EPCC District Committee – Member August 2001- 2005

Institutional Effectiveness Committee EPCC, MDP – Member August 2000 – Present

I retired from the City of El Paso, Department of Emergency Medical Services in December 1999, after serving over 18 years. During that time I enjoyed a very fast paced, high energy and personally rewarding career. In December 1999 after being offered a position at El Paso Community College, I made the change from Deputy Chief of EMS to faculty member at EPCC. I made the move through early retirement which allowed more time for my family while allowing me to participate in a career in education.

The greater part of my SISD volunteer time is currently directed to Montwood High School Band Boosters where I serve as the President. Band Boosters is a never ending process of supporting the students in a variety of bands and activities throughout the year. It is a position I love because it provides my wife and I the opportunity to be part of our children’s High School years.

Now I am attempting something new by running for a seat on the SISD School Board. It is sure to be a great challenge and I can tell you, I will give it all the energy and commitment possible. I hope you will support me in this new endeavor.

Thank You,

Tony Ayub.
